Five Tips for Surviving Colic

Surviving colic is a goal of a lot of new parents. It is estimated that over 20% of children experience colic. Here are some tips for making it through.

1. Understand what colic is. Colic is described as uncontrollable, long-periods of crying in a baby who is not hungry or wet and otherwise should be content. While it is true that every baby cries, some little ones cry for more than three hours a day, three to four days a week. Then it is colic.

2. Don't blame yourself. Although some uninformed people may tell you otherwise, colic has nothing to do with your ability as a parent. Colic happens even to the most loving and attentive parents.

3. Don't blame your diet. If you are breastfeeding, don't blame your diet. In the past colic was thought to be related to the digestive system, but there is little evidence that this is actually true. Although occasionally you may find a food that makes your baby more fussy, colic has more to do with a combination of the baby's temperament and an immature nervous system than anything else.

4. Take a break. Even if you are the only one caring for the baby, take a break from trying to please her for a few minutes. Lay her in a bed or a safe place and walk away for a couple of minutes to gather yourself together once in a while. Try asking a friend to help care for the baby for even an hour, because it is important for parents of colicky babies to take time for themselves.

5. See the "light at the end of the tunnel." Most cases of colic last about 3 months, but almost never last more than a year. So although it may be frustrating and stressful now, a sweet child will emerge before you know it.

10 Tips For A Safety And Secure Halloween

10 Tips For A Safety And Secure Halloween

Halloween is a special holiday for the children as they get to dress up as their favorite super hero, cartoon character, or some may go the scary route and dress up as a Witch, Vampire, or other "Things That Go Bump In The Night". Kids Love Halloween and with minimal preparation and a little common sense you can make this a Halloween for your children to remember, one that is both Fun and Safe.

Tips that will help keep your children safe and secure during "Trick or Treat"

1. It is not safe to allow young people to walk around the neighborhood after dark so be sure to send a responsible adult or older teenager along for the trip.

2. Choose a costume that is comfortable, flame resistant, and allows for good peripheral vision. It is also good to have some type of reflective tape on the costume to allow better visibility.

3. Providing your children with a filling "Spooky Halloween" meal before letting them go out to Trick or Treat will make them less likely to dig into the candy before they get home and you can check it out.

4. If your child is carrying a prop such as a Sword, Pitch Fork, or Scythe make sure that the edges are smooth and flexible to avoid injuries.

5. If candles are used in your Jack O Lanterns be sure they are placed far enough out of the way so no kids costumes accidentally catch fire. You may want to consider using Jack O Lantern light kits which can be found at your local Wal Mart or K Mart.

6. General everyday safety such as looking both ways before crossing the street, do not talk to strangers, do not get into any cars, or keep each other in sight at all times will go a long ways towards having a fun time.

7. If you are not going to go along with your children be sure that you know the route they will be taking and any stops that are planned during the outing.

8. Explain the difference between tricks and vandalism, also include that there is usually a clean up cost associated with vandalism. If they are caught vandalizing they should be made to clean up the mess that they have made.

9. Give them a time to be home and make sure they understand the importance of being home on time.

10. Be aware that Halloween also gives criminals a chance to dress up and blend in just about anywhere they want, so keep an eye out for strangers and people you do not recognize. Always keep up with the children in your group. And carry your preferred personal protection device and some canine repellent.

These are just a few of the actions that can be taken to make sure that this Halloween is both Fun and Safe. Just remember to use your head when making decisions that directly affect the safety of yourself and your family.

Sell Your Blog

Okay, so here's my story. I had just come home from the batting cages after knocking a few balls around with the guys. I turned on the computer to quickly check my e-mail before dinner and a message popped up telling me that my WordPress blog software was out of date-again. What? I just updated this thing like three days ago. What a hassle!

I admit it; when I first started my mountain biking blog, it was pretty cool. For a while, I was posting new entries nearly every day. But here's the thing: I'm not really one of these guys who likes to sit in front of the computer for hours on end -- I'm more of a get out there and do something guy! So after a while, the blog was starting to be more trouble than it was worth. To make things even worse, my girlfriend was beginning to drop little hints that she resented me spending so much time fooling around on the computer. Between keeping up with my blog, hanging with the fellas and softball practice, I barely had any time to spend with her.

Let's just say things we're getting a little "icy" at home-know what I mean? Anyway, I was starting to resent that damn blog too, 'cause it was eating up way too much of my time, and a little voice inside kept telling me, "dude, just sell your blog now and move on" But then a buddy of mine from work told me about a cool web site called michaelrogers.cn where you can sell your blog . Now, the more I thought about it, the more it started to seem like a pretty good idea. After all, it wasn't doing me much good just sitting there.

So when I got home from work, I checked out this Michael Rogers guy online and his Virtual Asset Management Company. It turned out to be a pretty sweet deal. Long story short-I ended up selling the mountain biking blog through his company, and making myself a nice profit. My girlfriend was also pretty excited about it, and you'll be glad to know things have "warmed up" again at home. Nice.

Basically, this Michael Rogers guy is a type of blog broker. Through his Virtual Asset Management Company, he helps you set a price for your blog, finds a buyer and then sells it. It's really just that simple. I mean, it's probably not that simple for him. But for me it was a piece of cake. Just set the price and let Michael Rogers sell it. Can't get much easier than that!

And you wanna know the best part of the whole deal? I ended up getting more for that stupid blog than I ever dreamed it was worth. Me and the GF are going to Mexico next month (5 star resort) with the proceeds of selling that one blog. How cool is that? I mean, think about it; I had this blog that was just pissing me off anyway, and cutting into my already full social life. It seemed like every other day I had to install some kind of "widget" or update the software or whatever. But by working with Michael Rogers, I not only got rid of the damn thing; I also made a nice piece of change in the bargain. Not bad eh?

The way I look at it, I can start another blog anytime I want. But for now, between softball, hanging with my boys, and spending time with the girlfriend, my life is pretty full. In fact, getting rid of that blog was probably the best move I ever made. So if anybody out there is in the same position, my advice is to let Michael Rogers sell your blog. It definitely worked for me. Thanks Michael Rogers , wherever you are!

If Your Child is Stealing

Introduction: My Child, the Thief A common problem that we as parents encounter is what to do when your child steals. There are a number of different reasons a child steals and a number of different ways to handle the problem. Young children do not steal. Children below the age of four or five do not have a concept of ownership. They do not understand that it is wrong to take things that belong to others. By the time a child enters elementary school, he should know that stealing is wrong. Children at this age take things because they lack self-control. A preteen or teen may steal for the thrill of it or because that is what friends are doing. He may be trying to gain a feeling of control over his life or to fill an emotional void. Whatever the reason your child is stealing, you need to approach the problem with wisdom. If you just react according to your natural inclination, your response will almost certainly be wrong and destructive. Why a Child Steals 1-Child Can't Control Himself Younger children lack self-control. A child may take something although he knows that stealing is wrong simply because he can't help himself. You should give your child the ability to get what he wants in an honest way. Also, you must try to minimize the temptation. 2-Child's Basic Needs are Not Being Met Children are completely dependent on their parents for all of their needs. A child who feels that his needs are not being met will eventually take the matter into his own hands. The easiest way for a child to do this is to take what he needs. What a person needs is subjective. Even if you feel that your child does not need something, it might be a real need for your child. For example, if the child's school friends have pocket money, then your child could have a need for pocket money. He will feel a lack if he doesn't have it, even if you provide him with everything that he wants. This type of child may be tempted to steal money just so he has money like everybody else. 3-Child Needs More Attention The most common reason that children steal is that they feel an emotional lack in their lives. A child, who does not have his emotional needs met, feels empty inside. He may take things in an attempt to fill the void. Often children who steal are lonely or having trouble in school or with friends. They lack the tools or the opportunity to express their feelings. Many children do not get the attention they need. Such a child may feel unloved or that the parents are not interested in him. This may or may not be true. As I explain in http://addadhdadvances.com/betterbehavior.html How to Improve Your Child's Behavior, how your child perceives your attention is more important than the amount of attention that you give. These children may translate their emotional needs into material desires. Stealing is their way for these children to express their discontent and to seek gratification. 4-Child Needs to Have Control Over His Life Children are acutely aware of their vulnerability. They lack control over their lives. Some children have difficulty with this. If the child has trouble feeling dependant, he may steal to gain a sense of control or to rebel. 5-Peer Pressure Older children are pulled after what their friends do. If the child is with a group of children that feel stealing is exciting, the child may steal to be part of the group. Sometimes, a child may steal to show bravery to friends. If your child has fallen in with bad friends there are things you can do to address the problem. See What to Do When Your Teen Chooses Bad Friends http://addadhdadvances.com/badfriends.html If You Suspect Your Child is Stealing 1-Stay Calm Don't overreact. When a child steals it does not mean that he is a thief or is headed for a life of crime. It is really no different than any other mistake your child makes. 2-Do not Take it Personally Children steal to get attention. If you take your child's stealing as a personal attack, you are reinforcing the reason the child stole. 3-Do Not Accuse or Confront Your Child This point must be stressed. You must catch your child in the act so that the situation speaks for itself. Never challenge your child with circumstantial evidence. Either the child will lie and you will reinforce his dishonesty or he will confess. If he tells the truth and you punish him, you will be teaching him that it pays to lie. Either way you are stuck. Circumstantial evidence won't do. Hearing that your child stole from a third party won't do. If your child denies it, then you must believe your child. If you don't, then you will show your child that you don't trust him. Nothing encourages a child to be dishonest more that knowing that his parents don't trust him. If the child confesses, you will not be able to punish him. Even if you are 99% sure your child is stealing that is not good enough to accuse him. For example, say that you look in your purse and the brand new $50 you took out from the bank yesterday is missing. You put your child's laundry away and you find hidden among his things your brand new $50. You did not catch your child. Maybe someone else also lost a new $50 bill and he found it. Maybe your $50 fell out of your purse and your child found it on the street. Unless you see your child reach into your purse and take out the $50 you did not see him steal. 4-Make Sure that Your Child Knows What He Did is Wrong This is particularly true of a younger child. What to Do When You Catch Your Child Don't ask the child for explanations. Merely state that he is not allowed to take things from other people. Do not sermonize. Just use simple explanations. "Stealing is wrong. You would not want anyone to take your toy. So it's wrong for you to take this toy." Never imply that your child is bad. Stealing is bad, not the child. Do not call your child a thief, dishonest, or a liar or any other name that you do not want him to become. When you give your child a label, he will grow to fill that label. Correcting the Wrong If Your Child Stole From Someone Outside the Family Your child must make restitution. If your child stole from a store or from a neighbor, then see that he returns the object. Have your child apologize and say he or she will never do it again. You should accompany your child to make it easier for him to correct the damage. If Your Child Stole Money from You Estimate what child took and make it clear that the child must pay you back. He may do this by helping around the house for money. You should pay him enough that he pays off his debt in about a month. Say to him that you realize he needs more money and give him an allowance or increase in allowance. Hide Temptation Don't leave money around where your child can find it. Tell his siblings that you are going to watch their money for a while. Don't tell them why. Don't send this child to the store to buy something with a large bill where there will be a lot of change. Putting the Incident into the Past Figure Out Why Your Child Stole If he needs more attention make a special effort to give it to him. If he needs to feel more control over his life, give him an increase in allowance and more freedom to spend it as he wishes. If he needs certain things to be part of his peer group, make sure that he gets them. Continue to Trust Your Child If your child is stealing it does not mean he is bad or he is a thief. You don't want your reaction to make him become that way. Your child will fulfill your expectations of him. If you view him as a thief, bad, or dishonest he will grow into that label. Be a Model of Honesty Children learn by watching their parents. You should show concern about the property of others. A parent who brings office supplies home or boasts about a mistake at the supermarket checkout counter, teaches his child that honesty is not important. Conclusion Stealing is a common problem. You should view it like any other mistake your child makes. It is something that has to be corrected, but it is not more than that. If you handle it properly, you can correct this problem quickly and easily.

Ways To Make Child Halloween Crafts Safe and Fun

Halloween can be an extremely fun time to spend with your kids doing some child Halloween crafts together. Preparing Halloween costumes, accessories and makeup for your kids can be exciting. But because you are making these for your kids, safety should also be in mind to keep the Halloween season enjoyable and a memorable one.

Keep it mind, however, that child Halloween crafts must be safe and suitable for toddlers to 12-year-old kids. Use non-abrasive/harsh materials. Instead, make sure to use hypoallergenic makeup and glitter specifically made for a child's sensitive skin. Abrasive/harsh materials you should avoid include tin foils, hard plastic from cutout objects (otherwise, you should file the sharp edges), pointed accessories, and twigs with splinters.

Avoid using adult makeup as these are made of stronger makeup components that can easily irritate a child's skin. Practice safe child Halloween crafts preparations and make your own Halloween makeup at home. Homemade Halloween makeup often does not cause allergic reactions because it is just made of cornstarch, corn syrup, food coloring and water. However, you can always do a patch test first.

Consider always the safety of your child when buying materials for child Halloween crafts. When using glitter don't buy the regular ones used for paper. These can be abrasive to both the skin and eyes and therefore can cause inflammation and reddening. Go to a specialty or makeup store instead and look for products that state "body glitter" or "face glitter".

Be careful when choosing household materials for your child Halloween crafts session. For accessories use cardboard instead of tin foil or cutout hard plastic. If your child is going to run around with a tin foil or cutout plastic star on a wand, the pointy edges could accidentally end up in the eye. Use cardboard or Styrofoam instead. You can wrap these in silver kitchen foil or glitter for that brilliant sheen. You can also spray-paint them with silver, gold or other metallic colors.

There are a variety of child-safe costumes sold in specialty shops for use in child Halloween crafts. If you're going to make a costume together with your child, it might be a good idea to put away those needles and use no-sew costumes for your child Halloween crafts idea. If you're going to buy a costume, make sure it is easily detectable from afar (in case your child gets lost), flame-resistant, and can fit well on your child so he/she doesn't trip.

Your child can come dressed as The Sleepwalker, which only requires your child to wear PJ's and set of curlers; you can also think of any character with a cape, such as superman or batman, which only requires you to attach a cape and a mask. You can create masks simply with a paper plate and garters.

Making child Halloween crafts both fun and safe for your kids doesn't have to be a difficult task. First think of safe materials and work around those using your imagination to create distinctive Halloween themes and styles.
